Senator Boxer's office has developed plans to designate areas throughout the state as federal Wilderness. Many of the proposed Wilderness boundaries would close important trails to cyclists forever. Those of you who have explored these trails know that they offer great riding.

Proposed Wilderness boundaries need to be adjusted to accommodate important trails currently used and often maintained by bicyclists.

You can help protect access to these fantastic trails. Below is a sample letter. Write your own or edit it as you see fit. The important thing is to send your letter; the time to act is now. Please note that a written letter is more effective than email.

Dear Madam/Sir:

As an avid bicyclist, I am concerned about proposals to designate areas in California as a federal Wilderness.

These areas offer cyclists and other outdoor enthusiasts unparalleled recreational opportunities. Bicyclists throughout California use trails in these areas as a means to experience the outdoors in a manner that is respectful of the environment and healthful.

Designation of these areas as Wilderness with the current set of proposed boundaries would eliminate important recreation within these lands. In addition to the loss of opportunities for cyclists, other users would suffer as well. Under the stewardship of the land management agencies, bicycle clubs have for years built and maintained trails in many of these areas for all to enjoy. This has helped prevent trail erosion and other hazards.

Proposed Wilderness boundaries need to be adjusted to accommodate important trails currently used and often maintained by bicyclists.

Also, there are other designations and plans the federal government can enforce to protect these areas. These other strategies involve the benefit of environmental protection, without needlessly eliminating access to those who seek to enjoy the area.

Please do not limit access to these public lands. They mean a tremendous amount to visitors, including bicyclists.
